The River Region Study Club 2018-2019 program was designed to give member dentists and auxiliaries the opportunity to enhance co-diagnostic and critical analysis skills through the shared successes and ‘lessons learned’ presented by industry leaders.

Course Description:
Steve Cain will review and highlight the 2018 tax reform law, and some of the changes both individuals and businesses can expect to see. The discussion will include a breakdown of the law's most complex provisions - the 20% write-off for pass-through income.

  1. Gain an understanding of how the new tax laws can impact them as dentists, business owners and individuals.
  2. Learn some basic strategies on maximizing the opportunities that the new tax laws offer.

“A Hopeless Tooth Is Not a Useless Tooth: Applications and Technique for Orthodontic Extrusion”
Presenter: Dr. Marco Brindis

Course Description:
This course will address the indications and considerations for orthodontic extrusion and other complex orthodontic movements in the esthetic zone in preparation for implant rehabilitation avoiding undesirable periodontal amputation that occurs following tooth loss.

Course Objectives:
Participants will learn

  1. The proper treatment sequence of orthodontic extrusion.
  2. Options to utilize non-restorable teeth to stabilize periodontal tissues in preparation for implant placement.

Interactive discussion in which each participant is asked to share one pearl on a clinical or non-clinical subject that could be helpful to others.

“Proper Staging of Treatment in the Esthetic Zone for the Adolescent Patient”
CaseFlix Series

Course Description:
Follow the diagnostic and treatment planning process of an 8 year old patient that presented with tooth number 8 being much larger than the adjacent central incisor. Initial space maintenance was initiated and monitored until he was 12 years old. Orthodontic, endodontic and periodontal consultations were completed in order to develop a long-term treatment plan with a good esthetic result.

Course Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, participants will

  1. Gain perspective on a multi-year, staged approach for treatment of the adolescent with restorative challenges in the esthetic zone.
  2. Have an increased understanding of the planning and communication strategies with dental specialists necessary for long-term treatment planning for the adolescent patient.

“Advanced Adhesion Minimally Invasive Dentistry”
Presenter: Dr. Matthew Nejad

Course Description:
Dr. Nejad's expertise is in advanced adhesive dentistry and the biomimetic approach, with minimally invasive techniques and conservation restorations that replicate the strength, function and biology of intact natural teeth. Dentists are given the hands-on opportunity to learn and apply prep, bonding and materials management techniques using models and provided handpieces and instrumentation.

“Predictable Diagnosis and Treatment of Clinical Crowns and Gingival Architecture Discrepancies”, LiveStream Education
Presenter: Stephen Chu, DMD, MSD, CDT

Course Description:
The focus of this presentation will be how to analyze tooth size discrepancies quickly, easily and predictably and how it relates to spacing and gingival architecture problems. Solutions will focus on interdisciplinary treatment periodontics (i.e., esthetic crown lengthening) and restorative dentistry. As both a prosthodontist and master lab technician, Dr. Chu will present a unique perspective designed to satisfy patients' and clinicians' needs and expectations.

Upon completion of this course, the attendee should be able to

  1. Recognize and analyze gingival architecture discrepancies.
  2. Apply understanding of interdisciplinary treatment approaches for esthetic crown lengthening.

Oral Pathology
Presenter: Susan Muller, M.D., Atlanta Oral Pathology

Course Description:
Oral lesions range from those of minimal concern to life-threatening conditions; often the co-diagnostic process is the key to problem discovery. Course information will include a photographic review of common and uncommon lesions, including case studies and high risk patient profile information. A clinical research update will include the latest on the HPV connection and trends in diagnosis and treatment.

Course Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, the dentist and dental hygienist will

  1. Understand how to screen for oral lesions and what steps to take to rule out oral cancer or other serious medical conditions.
  2. Have an updated understanding of the connection between HPV and oropharyngeal cancers.
